No hunting skills

Perfect morning light, thick bush just before the open grassland, all what we see is the mane and the top of the head of two male lions walking parallel to us. We soon lost them and we drive farther on and turn on the shortcut that cross the open plain.
A herd of buffaloes is ruminating in the grass, few meters away from the bushes. we stop and we wait. The lions were heading in our direction when we lost them, they probably were after the buffs, we wait.
After more or less one hour, we went back to check, just to find a lone lioness lying down, so back to the buffaloes again, they are slowly moving off, and now, only now the lions head out of the bush, one lioness and two dominant males. They are looking at the herd, way out of their reach. If they were on the hunt as they seemed to be the result was really awful.
The female looked really upset and start walking down to the river in the beautiful yellow grass, the males lazily followed.
It was a woderful show as we drove down to the middle road, to see the cats moving swiftly in the golden light, a perfect african landscape.
One after the other the three lions walked all the way, straight towards the car, crossed in front of us and moved to the river.
Here we lost the female, she went more east while the male went straight south, from a gully loads of impala started running, probably scared by the lioness, they run of, straight in front of the males that look completely confused, they rushed after one and then another without any real focus. When we though that the impala were all safe the other side two late ones leaped out of the bush. Now the males seems ready, one impala fastly passed in betwen but the second went straight towards the male, the male sprinted and jumped, the impala did the same and maaaaannn it flew over the potracted claws of the cat. it as amazing the lion basically on two legs, almost standing with the front legs stretched towards the herbivore, the impala in the air few inches over the lion's paws....... maaaaannn what a jump.... but where did the lion leave his hunting skills?
