Early morning, again working with Owen, also our friend Kim is with us for part of the morning.
We soon spotted lions in the riverbed the other side of camp, it is the Kwihala pride. They all seem tense and nervous but we do not see anything, eventually a huge and handsome male came out and all the pride stood and moved fast in the opposite direction. The male approached closer in the tall grass, he is beautiful, the backlight of the early morning sun on him, he stops for a drink and moved closer again. A female shortens the distance stiffly, the male stops, the females charges abruptly and hits the male. Both growl loud and the female goes back. Then surprisingly the cubs come and greet the male. All the cubs but two subadult males that probably are the reason of the female behaviour. The male must have tried alread to chase the youngster out and the female tries to protect them and to warn the male.
Some kilometers farther we got a leopard on a tree, a couple of vehicles are on the sigting and the leopard climbs down and go for the bushes. We all leave but I have a strange feeling. My instinct strongly tells me that we have to stick to the leopard, he is gonna kill. I tell Owen and after some brainstorming we decide to go and look for what is important for the documentary, lions and buffaloes. We found the same herd again going to drink at breakfast point and we found 2 males not far from the herd but nothing is happening so we went back to camp. Meanwhil the leopard killed an impala... and now is feeding on it..... we should have trust the instinct even if looking for buffs and lions was the right thing to do.
In the afternoon we found again Evander and Holy, they stalked Zebras but their tail chasing flies gave them away, they run after warthogs but they missed. The big herd went down again to drink and we enjoyed them at sunset, a huge cloud of dust surrounding them, they walked up the hill... orange the dominant color.
