My friend Naiti called me to say that there was a cheetah male at
Makutano so I gave my guests, who were just landed with the 13.25
flight basically straight from London via Dar, two options: either
going back to camp if they were too tired or going to try to see the
cat and coming back to camp at seven p.m..
They were very tired indeed but nontheless they voted for the spotted
options.
On route to there we spotted a pride of ten lions spread both sides of
the road.... not even half an hour after they landed.
Eventually we arrived at the cheetah, a big male in the shade of a
bush. We watched for a while and then we went around with the plan of
coming back in half an hour to see if the cat wanted to move.
When we did we stopped but we could not see the cheetah, after few
second we heard impala alarm call from some bushes opposite to the one
were the cheetah was before.
Immediately we thought the cat was moving so we drove in the
direction of the sound we found the impala and looking in the
direction of his gaze we spotted a cat but not quite the one we
expected, a young male leopard walked up to the car and started
walking on the road in front of us...... stunning.
As the leopard was walking the cheetah popped the head out of a bush
and gave a worried look to the unaware leopard that kept his gait
steady in the opposite direction...
As soon as the leopard was out of sight having crossed the riverbed
the cheetah moved promptly in the opposite direction.
On the way back we saw many ellies and three herds of buffs.
Not bad for the first afternoon in the African bush!!!
My camera was on strike.....
